Something Good From High Gas Prices

Maybe something good came from last year's high gas prices. The number of highway deaths in 2008 was the fewest since 1961. Preliminary statistics say that 37,000 people died in motor vehicle traffic deaths last year, down from 41,000 in 2007. This comes from an AP story reported by Fox News .

Christians know it is a blessing to die in the Lord (Revelation 14:13). But meeting your demise in a fiery crash of metal on the highway is not the way a reasonable person would prefer to be ushered into eternity. So be careful on the highways. Let's see if we can keep these numbers going in the right direction.

Gasoline prices are going up. That's normal in the springtime as consumption increases. However, the experts say we won't get anywhere close to last year's $4+ per gallon costs. That means more people will be on the highways. The danger level increases when traffic levels go up.

We can't control what other drivers do, but we can be serious about being good drivers ourselves. Every Christian should understand that he or she has a personal responsibility to perform well whenever sitting behind a steering wheel. The life you save may be your own.
